Why most WordPress SEO fails

The plugin is not the strategy - it's the console

Most WordPress SEO is a plugin install and a hope. Someone activates Yoast, fills out meta descriptions for six pages, turns everything green, and calls it done. Six months later they open Search Console, see nothing has moved, and blame Google's algorithm. The plugin was never going to rank the site on its own — plugins are the dashboard you drive from, not the engine.

Real WordPress SEO is three things working together. Technical SEO — the site is crawlable, fast, schema-rich, and structured the way Google wants. Content SEO — the pages actually answer what users are searching for, with the depth and internal linking that signals subject-matter expertise. Off-page SEO — authoritative sites link to yours because the content earns it, not because you paid a PBN.

We've been doing all three on WordPress since 2007 — before RankMath existed, before schema became a ranking factor, back when Yoast was still in beta. 500+ WordPress sites ranked across competitive Indian, US, and UK keyword markets. The plugins have changed a dozen times over. The underlying work has not.

01

Plugins without strategy

All the Yoast green lights in the world don't equal rankings. It just means your plugin is happy with its own settings.

02

No real technical audit

Broken crawl paths, orphaned pages, wrong canonicals, duplicate content — all invisible without a proper site audit.

03

Thin content

Google now rewards depth on commercial intent pages. A 500-word service page won't outrank a competitor's 2,500-word one.

04

Broken internal linking

Topic clusters, pillar pages, and silo structure matter more than most agencies realise. Random 'related posts' don't count.

05

Zero off-page work

On-page alone rarely ranks truly competitive terms. Authority compounds via links — earned, not bought.

What our WordPress SEO service covers

Technical, content, and off-page - the full stack

Not a checklist you could buy on Fiverr. The full set of work that separates a WordPress site Google can understand and trust, from one it quietly ignores.

Technical SEO audit

Full crawl via Screaming Frog / Sitebulb, robots.txt + sitemap review, canonical audit, schema audit, HTTPS and mobile usability checks, duplicate content sweep.

Core Web Vitals optimisation

LCP, INP, CLS all green. We tune the theme, lazy-load below the fold, optimise images to WebP/AVIF, and defer non-essential JS.

Schema markup

Article, Product, Service, Review, FAQ, HowTo, Event, LocalBusiness, BreadcrumbList. Every rich snippet your content actually qualifies for.

Keyword research & mapping

Real keyword research with commercial intent, volume, and SERP difficulty. Every target keyword mapped to a specific page with a content brief.

On-page optimisation

Title tags, meta descriptions, H-structure, internal linking, image alt text, URL slugs, and content depth across every page that matters.

Content strategy & briefs

Monthly content calendars informed by keyword gaps and competitor analysis. Detailed briefs that your writers (or ours) can execute against.

Content writing

Full-length SEO content (1,500–3,000 words per piece) when you need production help. Senior writers who actually know your industry — not undergrads with prompts.

Internal linking & topic clusters

Pillar pages, supporting articles, and silo structure built properly. Related-post automation that actually correlates with topic, not just tag overlap.

Off-page SEO & link building

Digital PR outreach, guest posting on real sites (not PBNs), niche-relevant backlink acquisition, broken-link reclamation, HARO campaigns.

Local SEO

Google Business Profile optimisation, local citations (especially critical for Indian clients), NAP consistency, geo-targeted schema, review generation flows.

International SEO

Hreflang setup for multi-country WordPress sites, country-specific schema, regional ranking reports, multi-language content strategy.

Rank tracking & reporting

Ahrefs / SEMrush / SE Ranking tracking. Monthly reports with actual insights — what moved, what didn't, what we're doing next — not just screenshots.

How we rank WordPress sites

Audit, fix, publish, earn - in that order

The WordPress SEO process refined across 500+ engagements. Each step is necessary — skipping any of them is why most SEO programs fail.

01
Weeks 1–2

Audit & baseline

Full technical, content, and backlink audit. Competitor analysis. Keyword opportunity map. Baseline rankings recorded — so we can measure real movement, not vibes.

02
Weeks 2–3

Technical fixes first

Nothing else matters if Google can't crawl and understand your site. Crawl errors, schema, Core Web Vitals, canonicals, and internal linking — all fixed before content work starts.

03
Weeks 4–12

On-page & content

Optimise existing pages, fill content gaps, build topic clusters. Most sites publish 4–8 new pieces per month at this stage, with each piece targeting a mapped keyword.

04
Month 3 onwards

Off-page & authority

Link-building outreach, digital PR, guest content on real niche sites, review acquisition, broken-link reclamation. Compounding work that keeps giving month after month.

05
Ongoing

Track, iterate, expand

Monthly rank tracking, Search Console monitoring, quarterly strategy reviews. We double down on what's working and kill what isn't. No contracts that force you to keep paying for dead tactics.

Real WordPress SEO project

Ranked #1 for 47 commercial keywords in 11 months - organic traffic 4.2×

B2B SaaS · WordPress SEOBengaluru, India

B2B SaaS stuck at page 3 for every commercial keyword. 11 months in, #1 rankings on 47 targets and organic now outperforming paid.

A B2B SaaS based in Bengaluru had a WordPress marketing site and six months of flat organic growth. They were ranking on page 3 for their main category keyword, page 4 for their main competitor-comparison keyword, and paying ₹8–12 lakh a month on Google Ads to fill the gap. Their previous SEO agency had them on a 'content-only' retainer — 2 blog posts a month, zero technical work, zero off-page.

We ran a 2-week audit and found the real issues: their schema was implemented for blog posts but not for their product / pricing / comparison pages; their site had 340+ orphan posts from a 2019 content dump; Core Web Vitals were yellow on mobile; and they had 0 high-DR backlinks in the last 24 months because nobody had done outreach. The plugins were fine. The strategy wasn't.

Over 11 months we fixed the technical side in month 1, rebuilt their topic cluster structure around 12 pillar pages in months 2–4, shipped 6–8 new SEO-briefed pieces per month, and ran a steady digital PR campaign that earned 34 high-DR links. By month 11 they were #1 for 47 commercial keywords, organic traffic was 4.2× baseline, and they'd cut paid spend by 60% because the organic side was filling the funnel.

WordPress SEO FAQ

Questions we get on every SEO call

First measurable rank movement in 6–12 weeks on technical fixes. Meaningful commercial rankings on competitive keywords in 6–9 months. Full organic traffic lift of 2–5× typically at 9–15 months, depending on the niche competitiveness and how far behind the starting point was. Anyone promising page-1 in 30 days is either lying or targeting zero-volume keywords.

RankMath Pro is our default for 80% of WordPress sites — fastest, cleanest schema support, best free tier, and the Pro tier is better value than Yoast Premium. Yoast is still excellent and has the deepest ecosystem. SEOPress is a strong choice for privacy-conscious or EU clients. AIOSEO suits sites already deep in its workflow. SureRank is great for WooCommerce-heavy builds. Squirrly shines on AI-assisted content optimisation. The plugin is not the strategy — we pick per project and migrate cleanly if switching makes sense.

Both. On-page alone rarely ranks competitive terms — you need authority (off-page) to compete. Our standard SEO engagement includes technical + on-page + content + off-page link building. Some clients start with technical-only (1-time audit & fix) and layer content / off-page later. We don't offer 'on-page only' long-term retainers because they don't actually move rankings past a point.

One-time technical audit & fix: ₹49,999–99,999 ($599–1,199) depending on site size. Monthly SEO retainer (technical + on-page + content + off-page): ₹59,999–1,99,999/month ($720–2,399) depending on scope, content volume, and off-page intensity. Quoted per site after the initial audit — no generic packages.

No, and anyone who does is either lying or doing something that'll get you penalised. We guarantee our work (the full audit + fix list is documented), we guarantee effort (monthly reports show exactly what was done), and we have a strong track record (500+ sites, case studies available). But Google's algorithm isn't under anyone's control — results depend on niche competitiveness, starting position, and how committed the client is to content production.

AI-assisted content is fine if it's genuinely useful, factually accurate, and edited by a human with subject-matter knowledge. Pure AI content — prompt in, publish out, no human review — underperforms in 2026 because Google's 'Helpful Content' system flags it. We use AI for research, outlines, and first drafts; humans (senior writers, subject experts) shape the final piece. This is the approach that actually works.

There's no magic number. What matters is: quality (DR 30+ is the minimum we'll chase), relevance (links from sites in your niche carry 10× the weight of generic ones), velocity (10 quality links a month beats 100 one-off links), and anchor-text distribution (mostly branded / naked URL, some keyword, varied enough to look natural). We aim for 8–15 high-quality links per month on a standard program.

Yes. Local SEO is particularly important for service businesses in Indian metros — Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune. We handle Google Business Profile optimisation, local citations across JustDial / Sulekha / IndiaMART / local directories, NAP (Name, Address, Phone) consistency across the web, geo-targeted schema, and review-generation workflows. International local SEO (US cities, UK towns) also covered.

Yes, this is one of our most common SEO migrations. RankMath has a built-in importer that handles the bulk, but the real work is: verifying every meta title and description carried across intact, rebuilding schema that was set manually in Yoast, preserving canonical settings, and validating in Search Console that nothing regressed. We usually complete the switch in 2–3 days with zero ranking movement.

WordPress has more SEO control than almost any other platform — full schema customisation, unlimited plugin options, theme-level performance tuning, .htaccess redirect control, sitemap generation at the engine level. That flexibility is also the trap: more ways to configure something wrong. On Shopify or Wix you're stuck with platform limits; on WordPress you have everything available — which is why WordPress with expert SEO consistently outranks the same brand on a hosted platform. It's why WordPress powers 43% of the web.
